41 years later, I’m going back to school!

The LTC Facility I work at posted an offer of paid CNA training; without hesitation,  I jumped on the opportunity!

I started my first class on Thursday, and have the weekend to get acclimated to this new regiment of reading, working,  and more reading.I’ve agreed to work evekry Friday/weekend through the next 8 weeks, and may pick up hours after school as well.

I have a good feeling this is going to be a better year. I will remain optimistic!

The ride to Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center Milwaukee is a little less than hour, 85 miles round-trip. I’ve travelled the route many times, could do it in my sleep. Recently I nearly did just that, literally.

I am desperately in need of sleep, and sure the ride to Milwaukee for another Dr appointment and labs, will be a grueling one, fighting to keep my eyes open both there, and back again. On the way home on Monday, I caught myself 3 times, closing my eyes, and drifting off into a catatonic state. Someone on the other side was walking toward me, told me to wake up and I did. That person’s image kept me alert the rest of the way home.

With 45 minutes until departure, I am caffeinated to the teeth, and may have to make an espresso as backup. If I can muster up the energy to go back downstairs and make one….

almost time to leave, catchya on the flip side…

…sitting outside tonight gazing up at an almost cloudless sky, a billion stars twinkling down at me. Off in the distance, a lone biker returns from a night ride and as I sit and listen patiently, I hear him slowly ease into the neighborhood, Idle down his engine and shut off- it’s a good sound when a night rider returns to his home safe and sound.
Above me a very thin cloud array sprays over me like a giant Milky Way and from out of the head of Cignus, a bright shooting star blazes a trail through the sky before dissipating into a gaseous billion particles.
…and I made a wish.

It’s been a day.
First, I rippit’d Mike’s Ribbed Scarf. Seems I’ve temporarily misplaced a skein of Berocco Vintage, and nearing the end of Skein #1, I have decided to just start over and make him a hat.
I’d like to make him a toad, but that is for another blog 😉
Anyway, it’s what he really wants, so there we are.

Think I will watch some Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee on Crackle, that’ll get me in a good mood.
And then pick up an episode or two of Longmire….OMG Siri knew about Longmire?
Longmeier Longmeier Longmeier episode of Longmeier…. Well Far fig Newton I guess Siri has short-term memory loss. ROFL!!!

That’s been my favorite word since back in my deli days. We had a little German girl named Hilda who worked in our store, she was all of 5’1 a real firecracker! She was the most hilarious person and we got along so well- I always used to crack up when she would get on a rant about something and OMYGAWD, her German roots came out! I called her the little Fahrvergnügen, after the VW commercials of the day. She reminded me of a little VW Bug, always puttering about, “MEE-MEEP!’

My head hurts, I’m sleepless in Muskego, missing home, my Guys…

I found this picture of Igor at 2 months, with Mike, on the nightstand at SIL’s house, sleep-over; it made me smile despite this killer headache…

I am one day from finishing a very special project I’ve been working on, going on ** months now~ the tulips happened to be a gift card I got in the mail last week, and the colors matched perfectly! Irony 🙂

I finished a little doggy sweater for a friend’s puppy-need to get it in the mail… ADORABLE and easy FREE PATTERN to knit up in a couple days.

Apologies if I double-post projects. I am a little sleep-deprived and stressed these days…
Too much time spent at this beautiful place…

and had a terrific piece of carrot cake for my birthday yesterday. Not bad, for hospital food… 🙂

Good Night, Milwaukee, until tomorrow~

Mickey Mouse Club with Annette Funicello – Davy Crockett April 8, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — Annette Funicello, who became a child star as a perky, cute-as-a-button Mouseketeer on “The Mickey Mouse Club” in the 1950s, then teamed up with Frankie Avalon on a string of ’60s fun-in-the-sun movies with names like “Beach Blanket Bingo” and “Bikini Beach,” died Monday. She was 70.

She died at Mercy Southwest Hospital in Bakersfield, Calif., of complications from multiple sclerosis, the Walt Disney Co. said.
Her legacy lives on in her many appearances on the Mickey Mouse Club TV program. The pretty, dark-haired Funicello was just 13 when she gained fame on Walt Disney’s television kiddie “club,” an amalgam of stories, songs and dance routines that ran from 1955 to 1959.
She left us with some great memories. Really~:)

I saw a great recipe for fanned baked potatoes on Chef’s Country, last night.

4 baking potatoes, scrubbed
Shredded cheddar cheese
Herb bread crumbs, crushed
1 T melted butter
Salt, pepper

Pre-heat oven to 325.
Scrub potatoes, and make thin slices, do not slice all the way though. Pre-cook potatoes in microwave on high 9 minutes. Rinse potatoes good to rinse starch away, and to prohibit gluten from forming during baking. Place potatoes on a cookie sheet, fanning slices slightly. Mix bread crumbs and shredded cheddar cheese together; brush melted butter over potatoes. Mound cheese breaking over potatoes, allowing some to fall into slices. Sprinkle a little olive oil over all, and bake 20 minutes to melt cheese.
Serve immediately.

…as I reflect on Mr’s profound observation today: “we really do take too much for granted, sometimes too late…”, I made a mental checklist of things I don’t take for granted, easy enough.
I will be thankful for another day, and another, and another, as long as the sun lights our days, and the moon lights our nights.

And I will always be thankful for the hard work of my folks, and their service to our country.

Happy Birthday, EB and CJ! June 23, 2012

It was last Friday, but I didn’t forget. I’m still working on trying to somehow get a handle on the fact you’re gone.
Bits and pieces of our friendship filter into my daily routine, at the oddest times. Today I went to Goodwill with my friend Linda Godfrey, and while I’m browsing up and down the aisles of Anchor Hocking glassware and Pfaltzgraff dinner plates, candle holders of every shape and height, angels holding a candle cup ready for a wax taper, I’m musing at the sad finality of people’s lives discarded and winding up on a thrift store shelf.
I was tempted to purchase a bag of 50’s Coats & Clarks cotton crochet thread, size 10. Some of the little balls had some minor stains on them, possibly water marks with age. I put them back, thinking better than to buy some old bedspread cotton, and now I wish I had kept them. I’ll go back next week and grab them, if they are still there. But, as I was looking at them trying to decide if I should take them, I mentioned to a lady standing next to me, “this is what will happen to our stashes, when we die! “, and we both laughed.
As we were passing by a cart with some miscellaneous relics yet to be shelved, I happened upon a lovely framed crochet butterfly that someone painstakingly preserved, a gift, maybe? I was so thrilled, I snatched it up for a measly 99¢! I may even attempt to locate the pattern, and I know just where to post a query.
When we got back, Linda gave me a hug and a parting gift, a huge hand printed poster of Herbs and Ailments Cross Reference Chart.

And the piece du resistance, a hand painted framed art, it will be a perfect compliment to the herb chart!

While sifting among the trash to treasures, someone’s life nearly forgotten, I am reminded of my own mortality, and that someday, my stuff may wind up in a similar place, as did a few of my mother’s things, stuff I couldn’t find room for, in my heart or the moving truck.

Looks like we might get some rain? Everything is drying up, the grass is burnt, and hand watering is essential to my potted garden upstairs.

Miss Pepper says, “that’s enough about you, pay attention to me now.”

My Firstborn Baby Girl turns 36 today- Happy Birthday, CJ! Ha! The Curly Girly Princess gets a head shot in 0:)

Angels among us April 14, 2012

I am a believer in angels, though not the picture-book kind with winds and harps. Such angelic accoutrements seem as nonsensical to me as devils sporting horns and carrying pitchforks. To me, angel wings are merely symbolic of their role as divine messengers.

A friend recently posted this quote, and it sent me down a familiar yet less travelled path, one that I welcome.

I believe angels can take on different forms and meanings, from visions of loved ones who have passed before us, waiting to rejoin and continue along a different path together, to a total stranger who happens to simply “be there” at the right moment. Whether by way of a traumatic event, or merely a quiet moment in reflection, if that vision we perceive as angelic brings inner peace, joy or a smile, then it must be an angel.
We have a deep-seated desire to cling to hope when all else fails us. Is it coincidence when a spark of hope is ignited by a kind word at just that point in time when we find ourself in some dark place? I think not. I believe each of us has the ability to reach out, to fan the spark of hope for another.

My ex’s wife has been what I would call an angel. She chose to contact me out of a need to update me on personal life-altering events one of my children was going through. As a mother herself, she knows how important it is for us to be kept informed, when our children are unable to share.
She’s also a lot closer to my kids geographically speaking, so she is afforded more opportunities for taking pictures of one of my granddaughters, 3 year old Rhonda, a Preemie born 8 weeks early. Rhonda too, has angels watching over her.

I leave you with another version of an angel, in the form of Annie Lennox. 0:)
